“Central” as it is called, was initially organized in 1883, under Reverend L. T. Christmas. The church building was erected by local workmen. Although the interior of the building was damaged by fire in 1896, the exterior was unharmed and is today one of the few African- American Church buildings to survive intact. Under the leadership of Rev. Christmas, the Wilmington Training School was located at the church in 1889 and 1890. In 1896, Rev. C.P. Johnson stated that he came to the Central Baptist Church to, “…labor in the up-building of my race.”
